YUSEN Philippines Shares the Vision of The Mark Perry Tugade Memorial Foundation

1

The Mark Perry Tugade Memorial Foundation is a non-stock, non-profit organization which aims to perpetuate the memory, ideals and aspirations of the late Mark Perry Tugade, son of espouses Art and Marisol Tugade. One of its many aspirations is to be able to help in community development, wherein, the Habitat for Humanity was chosen to be its first project, in collaboration with the Soroptomist International, Alabang Chapter, wherein Mrs. Tugade is a Directress for Manila South.

It was a festive mood on a Saturday of February 19, 2005, as organized by the Mark Perry Memorial Foundation, other generous donors and volunteers included Perry's Realty Inc., Yusen Air & Sea Service Phils., Inc. Transglobal Consolidators Inc., Map Logistics, Orchard, Asiana Philippines, Garuda Philippines, Teriyaki Boy, RCS Logistics, and golfer friend Mr. Rolly Enriquez of Remec Phils converged at 7:00 AM Starbuck Café at Filinvest Mall.  At exactly 8:00 AM, the group headed their way to Habitat for Humanity Project at San Jose, Muntinlupa leaving their cars and together took the rented jeepneys.

The organizers gave an introduction on how Habitat for Humanity was founded and a simple program for all participants.  They also gave some tips on do’s and don’t in building a house. After the prayer, the group started working under the blazing heat of the sun.

Everybody really enjoyed mixing the cement, putting mixture in a pail and dispatching to the next guy bringing them up to the second floor. It was also fun laying the hollow blocks and seeing the wall created. The Bayanihan spirit was very much visible when a truckload of hollow blocks arrived. In less than 10 minutes, everybody formed a single line and transfer the blocks one by one from one person to another until it reached the stacking area. The spirit was so alive that even the residents there got so excited, joined in and took part in the hollow block relay.

When it was time to wrap-up, everyone looked dirty and tired, but undoubtedly happy and fulfilled. Indeed, this is one experience, the group will always treasure not only that they were able to take part in a noble purpose of providing a home for the homeless, but this time they have become to understand as well the labors of our carpenter brothers.

These activities continued for two more Saturdays with different set of volunteers from Northwest Airlines, Thai Airways, and those second and third group of employees from Perry's Realty, Transglobal Consolidators, Yusen Air & Sea Service Phils., Inc. and Map Logistics.

Others who took part in this worthwhile endeavor through their kind donations are the PLDT Corporate Business Group, Ms. Rebecca Liveta, Diversified Solutions, Inc, Mr. Boy Manzano, Atty Nick Lazaro, Atty Benjie Chy, Mr. Leo Magahum, Mr. Rickson Chiong, Mr. Lito Marafia, Mayor Edwin del Rosario, Pair Pags, Mr. Jason Tanlimco Yap, Conrads Grill/Park n Fly, Mr. Leo Lacbo and Ms. Abby Lacbo.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-denominational Christian charity dedicated to eliminating poverty housing worldwide. Each homeowner family invests hundreds of hours of their own labour or 'sweat-equity' into the building of their home and the homes of other families. This fosters community development, increases the pride of ownership, and reduces the cost of labour - thereby making the homes affordable to families on low incomes. When the homes are complete, the homeowners make interest free mortgage payments to a revolving fund. The money in the fund is used to build more houses.

In addition to the homeowner's sweat equity, homes are built using donations of money and materials from corporate and individual supporters. Volunteers help to build the houses, which significantly reduces the cost.
