Security Awareness and Robbery Response Training Seminar

“JOHNNY ENGLISH” brought the house down with uncontrollable laughter as we were glued to the screen during our lunch break.  This movie, however, stressed the alarming fact that “98% of robbery/hi-jacking cases are inside job” as  disclosed during the Security Awareness Seminar and Robbery Response Training held last May 22, 2005 at the Airport Casino Filipino’s Forum Hall.

We organized the seminar/training as part of the TAPA (Technology Asset and Protection Association) Certification requirement.  There was an overwhelming attendance of approximately 120 participants comprised of Yusen employees, security personnel, truckers, and loaders who were mostly from sub-contracted trucking companies.  We started off with a briefing on the Security Policy and Procedures by TAPA OIC,  Andi Homecillo.  For the seminar proper, our guest speakers were experts on industrial security, namely: Messrs. Ed Fulgencio, Fernando Diaz and Carlos Aquino…

"....security begins with loving and being proud of your jobs".  From left to right, photos taken during the impromptu inspirational talks from VP Bhoie Arvesu, Air Export Operations Manager Allan Baraoidan, Fleet Manager Freddie Alejandro and Brokerage Manager Dars Penamante --all of whom started their careers as janitor/messenger, processor/drivers and security guard, respectively.

One of the guest speakers emphasize the importance of  “Loving and being proud of our jobs particularly for the drivers and loaders” (considering that in the Philippines’ preference is given to white-collared jobs).  Taking this cue, impromptu speeches were given by VP ‘Bhoie” Arvesu, Air Export Manager Allan Baraoidan, Fleet Manager Freddie Alejandro and Brokerage Manager Dario Penamante.  So what do these men have in common?  They all started out as either janitors, driver/processors or security personnel who poured their heart and minds into whatever tasks no matter how menial or trivial it was.  Their tales truly touched our hearts and inspired listeners.

As part of the day’s activities, we asked all the participants (grouped into 10) to act-out the contingency measures of various scenarios of possible emergencies such as hi-jacking, collision, etc. …and WOW! Yes, you can say that again.  That afternoon proved the versatility and natural talent of Filipinos which includes their prowess on film-making (less the film …ha ha ha). We produced instant script writers, directors, narrators, actors and sound technicians/mimics.This day’s activity showed the commitment and support Yusen management and staff on its efforts to enhance security management.  Everyone participated with 100% enthusiasm despite the fact that it was Sunday --- REST DAY.  As a token of appreciation for everyone’s whole-hearted participation, coupons courtesy of the Casino were distributed and tried our luck at the slot machines and card tables.

Auditor Training on TAPA at Shanghai, China

In relation to the recently concluded TAPA (Technology Asset and Protection Association) Audit of YAS Warehouse facility, two of personnel were sent to TAPA Training held  in Shanghai, China (from June 29 – 30, 2005).   YAS Phils. has to send two personnel for us to have an internal auditor who will help ensure that policies and procedures are implemented and that our facility is compliant to all the requirements.  Two of our TAPA working committee members, Diego Cruz III (our I.T. Supervisor) and Arnold Abales (our Bldg and Maintenance Supervisor) attended the seminar for them to be more familiar and with the TAPA as they will also serve as our internal auditors to help us sustain our certification.

During the first day of the seminar, the facilitators discussed about the meaning of TAPA, how it was formed/ organized, its goal and objective.  It also discussed topics on the type of TAPA classification and the corresponding requirements, manner of auditing and reporting the result of audit.    On the second day, attendees were asked to divide into groups and do workshop.  Each group were asked to design a warehouse house and present it for review and comments from facilitators and other attendees.
