Yusen Phils. led by our president, Arthur P. Tugade, EVP - Mr. Takatomo Ito, VP - Mr. Rustico Arvesu and the rest of the senior management team contributed cash, and was able to raise Php 170,000, the amount enough to adopt 2 hectares of unplanted areas at La Mesa Watershed, Quezon City.  Two (2) hectares covers 800 seedlings to be planted by more than 100 employees who joined this worthwhile endeavor.

We met the La Mesa Team at the Commonwealth, Quezon City, at about 8:00 AM, and together we proceeded to the Amparo Gate of the La Mesa Watershed. The road was muddy and rough due to the rainfall of the past few days. We started to trek our way to the designated planting area. There were mixed emotions, sadness when we see tragedy of the already denuded forest and hopeful for those areas where we can see have been planted by previous volunteers.

The two kilometer walk took us about 30 minutes. Everyone was happy and excited during that walk; totally unmindful of the difficult pathway to our destination. Laughing, joking and challenging co-employees for the walk that everyone seemed no longer had the luxury of experiencing in the city. Tired and heavily perspiring on reaching the planting site, but definitely very enthusiastic to start our mission.

The Bantay Kalikasan coordinator, Mr. Val Mendoza warmly welcomed and briefed us about this forest and the "kaingin practice" that caused its denudation.  He further mentioned that ABS CBN Bantay Kalikasan initiated the project of reviving the La Mesa Dam. The La Mesa Dam is the biggest water reservoir in Metropolitan Manila and the dam that supplies the water needs of the NCR residents.  Mr. Val Mendoza, likewise showed us how to properly plant the 800 seedlings.
