  First Sumiden Circuits, Inc.

First Sumiden Circuits, Inc (FSCI) is one of Yusen Philippines’ loyal customers since 1999.  Yusen Phils has been a witness to the growth of FSCI for the past six (6) years as it continues to gain a stronghold in the flexible printed circuit market.

Below is a brief profile of this valued customer:

First Sumiden Circuits, Inc. (FSCI) is a joint venture among Sumitomo Electric Industries, Inc. (SEI, with 51%), First Philippine Holdings Corporation (FPHC, with 40%), and Sumitomo Corporation (SC, with 9%). Incorporated in March 1996, FSCI was registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) as a pioneer economic zone enterprise in April 1996. Its plant at the Special Ecozone of the Light Industry and Science Park (LISP) in Cabuyao, Laguna, was inaugurated in July 1997.

FSCI manufactures flexible printed circuits (FPCs) which are small, lightweight wiring components with electronic circuits printed on a flexible film.  In order to meet customer needs for complex parts mounting indispensable for high density information transmission, we have recently established flip-chip mounting technology for FPC application (FCOF). FPCs are widely used in electronic devices such as hard disk drives (HDDs), cell phones, car audio equipment, DVD and CD players, cameras, and printers.  Consistent with its PEZA registration, FSCI sells 100% of its FPCs to the export market. These are either transported by air to its overseas customers, or by truck to its local multinational customers as constructive exports. FSCI uses freight forwarders to handle its export shipments, but delivers directly to its local customers.

The joint venture covers both technical and marketing support to be provided by SEI, a global leader in the manufacture of FPCs. This enables FSCI to take advantage of the strong global network of SEI.  While FPHC's thrust is mainly in infrastructure development, power generation and construction, this joint venture with the Sumitomo Group marked the Lopez Group's entry into the technology-intensive, export-oriented electronics manufacturing.  Unlike SEI’s other plants in Japan and China, FSCI is the only integrated manufacturing plant, with capability for both upper process and lower process.  Upper process is the first phase of the FPC manufacturing development wherein raw materials are manufactured into worksheets.  Lower process is the second phase wherein worksheets are cut into singulated units prior to shipment to the customer.

FSCI strives to become a center for global manufacturing competence in FPC manufacturing.  Part of the strategy of SEI in locating its plant in the Philippines is to locate near its customers.  FSCI's strategic plan is guided by its vision of becoming the "world's leading manufacturer of flexible printed circuits" and its mission to "capture the flexible printed circuits market by providing the  highest quality, lowest cost and fastest delivery time, in order to increase the value for our stakeholders".

FSCI is shaping a culture of innovation, empowerment, and agility that values employee learning and continuous improvement.  Its Bible-based culture serves as enabler of its business excellence and growth.  The company recognizes that its success is a blessing from God.  Employees are guided by a set of core values, which have been published and disseminated to all employees through communication channels, training programs and company-wide activities following the deployment process of the performance management system. These values, manifested in employees’ behavior at all levels of the organization, are: Customer satisfaction, Ownership and commitment, Discipline, Teamwork, Integrity, Continuous improvement, and Respect for each other.  To define these core values, FSCI chose Scriptural references that put forward the principles behind these values.

As a proof of FSCI’s commitment to quality, they have been awarded the Philippine Quality Award Recognition for Proficiency in Quality Management (Level II) in the 7th cycle of the PQA (2004). FSCI, in its initial bid for the award, demonstrated excellence in infusing quality and productivity in the production and delivery of its products. Based on the PQA criteria, it was able to achieve significant progress in building sound processes.  FSCI was recognized last February 22, 2005 in the 7th PQA ceremony held in the Heroes Hall of Malacañang with Vice President Noli de Castro conferring the awards.

Yusen Phils is proud to partner with First Sumiden in its journey to excellence.  Yusen Phils is currently handling FSCI’s export shipments to Bangkok, Osaka, Pudong, Singapore and Hong Kong.
